Why “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever“ Is Rated PG?
- Thematic Material
The movie touches on themes that might be challenging for very young children to understand. The story focuses on the Herdmans, a group of siblings known for causing trouble, who get involved in the town’s Christmas pageant. The film explores ideas like tolerance, kindness, and second chances, as the Herdmans slowly show the town they may not be as bad as they seem. Some of these themes may be a bit mature for younger audiences, who may not fully grasp the underlying messages about forgiveness and understanding. - Brief Underage Smoking
One of the reasons for the PG rating is the inclusion of brief scenes that depict underage smoking. While these scenes are not a major focus of the movie, they are present and could potentially influence younger viewers. By adding this detail to the rating, the MPA alerts parents that they may want to discuss this behavior with children who watch the film.

Storyline:
The Herdmans are known as the “worst kids in the history of the world.” They lie, steal, and bully, creating chaos wherever they go. One day, they sneak into a church looking for snacks, and unexpectedly end up in the lead roles of the town’s Christmas pageant. Grace (played by Judy Greer), who is directing the pageant for the first time, and her family—her husband Bob (Pete Holmes) and daughter Beth (Molly Belle Wright)—are overwhelmed by the task, especially with the town pressuring them to kick the Herdmans out. But as rehearsals go on, the Herdmans may surprise everyone and help the town understand the true meaning of Christmas.
